How to Know If You Need Service
Several telltale signs indicate that your car needs service. The most visually apparent is the dashboard warning lights. If your oil or check engine light illuminates, you'll want to have your ride looked at immediately.
Other signs include:
- Squealing, grinding, or skipping noises: If your engine or brakes make odd sounds like squealing, grinding, or skipping, some components may be worn out, or you may have a fluid leak.
- Car favors one side of the road: If your car consistently drifts to one side of the road, it's likely one or more of your tires should be replaced, or there's an alignment issue.
- Dim headlights: Are your headlights dimming randomly? Do the lights flicker in your car when you start it? Those are signs of a failing battery. You can temporarily fix the problem by wiping corrosion buildup on the terminals; however, you'll probably want to replace the battery soon.
How to Know If Your Vehicle Needs New Tires
Tires can generally last anywhere between five and 10 years. However, it depends on several key factors, including the local climate, the quality of the tires in question, and your driving behavior. Your driving habits will impact the lifespan of your tires. Due to this, here are a few habits to avoid while you're out on the road:
- Speeding
- Sudden stops
- Accelerating too quickly from a stopped position
If you're curious whether or not it's time to have one or more of your tires replaced, there's a simple way to check them on your own. First, reach into your pocket or purse and grab a penny. Next, insert the penny into the tread grooves with Lincoln's head down. Repeat it on several locations of the same tire. If Lincoln's head is not covered fully, you'll have around 2/32 of an inch worth of tread left.
Depending on state laws, a tire is considered too old or excessively worn down if its tread is less than 4/32 of an inch. Using the penny test, you can ensure your tires are ready to handle normal weather and road conditions.
Take the same penny and flip it around for more extreme conditions so the Lincoln Memorial is facing you. Turn it upside down. This time, when the tire tread is covering the rooftop of the Lincoln Memorial, you'll know that the tire has at least 6/32 of an inch of tread wear left.
If, in either of these cases, you see that the tread has worn down too far or unevenly, we urge you to get new tires as soon as possible. In the meantime, avoid making trips that involve snowy, icy, or wet weather conditions.
To be 100 percent sure, simply stop by to see our team at one of our locations. We'll be happy to take a look. Plus, we're proud to offer great deals on tires. Our factory-trained service specialists will inspect your vehicle and tires. That way, you can travel safely under any weather and road conditions you're likely to find during your travels, whether you're cruising around Wyoming or beyond!
